As I sat with a dear sister yesterday, having a beautifully deep conversation about the journey, we found ourselves contemplating the role of choice in meeting each day and each moment of our lives from a place of joy, and how that reconciles with simply being with what is, knowing that not every day and every moment is going to feel joy-filled.
The remembrance that came to the surface during our conversation was this:
It is in the practice that we build the habit of choosing to see the good in our lives, and it is this practice that helps us reclaim joy more and more often in our everyday experience.
The guidance for me personally from Spirit has been to turn toward God in the dark moments rather than trying to move through them alone.
There is a teaching woven through so much of the spiritual path that reminds us that everything we need is already within us. This I know to be true, but I have come to understand it through the remembrance that God is within us. I do not believe we are being asked to rely solely upon the strength or understanding of the human self. Rather, we are invited inward, into relationship with the Divine Presence that lives there, where wisdom, grace, strength, love, and guidance are always available to us.
I have found on my own path that when I attempt to journey through the darkness alone, without guides and without the remembrance of my oneness with God, Source, the path becomes far more difficult.
When I remember that I am never alone, and that there is unending grace and power available within my relationship with Spirit, I am strengthened.
I remember that I do not have to carry the burden on my own.
Within some personal empowerment teachings, I have found that the call to lean entirely upon our own understanding and our own power can leave me feeling incredibly lonely.
Because when I struggle, who am I to turn to if I believe that I alone must find my way through? What happens when I cannot move through something difficult with grace on my own?
One of the greatest breakthroughs of my life came when I remembered that I was not alone.
I began to remember the presence of God. For me, at that time, it came in the form of Yeshua the Christ.
And yet, what I have come to know is that there are many forms through which we can pour out our hearts and remember our own power and potential in and with the Divine.
Krishna. Buddha Nature. Mother Earth. Universal Life Force Energy. God. Source. Love.
For me, it was the beautiful love of Yeshua that carried me through until I remembered more and more of my own connection and power as I developed a relationship with Spirit.
You see, we are all on this beautiful exploration of the Self.
And while it is, in many ways, a solo journey into the inner frontier, we are not alone. We have never been alone.
There is something profound that happens when we reach a hand into the mystery, into the unknown, into the invisible, and discover that we are met there by the most Divine Love.
When we live our lives in communion with God, Source, everything becomes so much easier.
Not because life stops presenting us with difficulty. Not because every day becomes joyful or every experience becomes comfortable. But because we no longer believe we must walk through any of it alone.
When we surrender moment by moment and allow ourselves to trust in the power of All That Is, we begin to remember that yes, we do get to choose.
Yes, we are the divine directors of our lives.
And yet, I have found that the path becomes so much more wondrous, beautiful, and even fun when we journey with Spirit beside us, alive within every moment.
When we develop that relationship as we would with the dearest friend on this physical plane. When we speak. When we listen. When we ask. When we trust. When we pour out our hearts.
When we turn our whole heart over to God, Source, Love, something begins to make sense.
We remember that even in the darkest moments, when life feels heavy and arduous, there is a Light within us and all around us that can lift us from that darkness much more quickly than we may be able to accomplish standing only upon our own two feet.
I know there are many paths to understanding and Divine Wisdom, and I can only reflect upon what has and continues to work for me.
For me, it is Bhakti. Devotion to the Divine.
Pouring love out of my heart in gratitude for what is, without needing to change it in any way.
This has served me in the most beautiful ways.
I find myself able to move through difficult times with greater grace and ease, for myself and for others.
Situations and people that cause me pain seem to clear from my awareness more easily. My heart softens. My perspective widens. I remember again.
It is all simply an exploration.
Each day, I choose to practice because I have experienced life without the practice. Without the devotion. Without surrendered trust. Leaning only upon my own understanding.
And I am always met there with more struggle and difficulty.
So through the beautiful trial and error of life, I continue to lean into what has produced the most fruit.
Joy. Grace. Compassion. Laughter. Awe. Freedom.
And again and again, I find these things through letting go.
Through surrender. Through trust. Through relationship. Through remembering that I am held within something infinitely greater than the small self that sometimes believes it must figure everything out alone.
This does not mean that difficult moments disappear.
It means that when they come, I know where to turn.
I remember that there is a hand already extended into the darkness. I only have to reach for it.
For me, in this life, this is the way.
Much love, many blessings,
